Hi,

I'm just curious if it is a good idea to read this book as a fist poker book?

I've played a bit online for micro stakes and some live games, and I'm just about to read my first book in the subject to substantiate my knowledge. I've already preordered the ebook, so the only question is should I start with this, or fist with something like "Getting Started in Hold 'em" which is more targeted the beginners like me.

If it is okay to start with this ebook, should I immediatelly start playing $1-$2 6-max games or should I gradually reach this level from micro stakes? If gradually, can the concepts and technics from this ebook be applyed to micro stakes as well?

Thanks!

This book will take you to $1-$2 winner if you study it well, but if you are playing microstakes and don't have a lot of experience I would still move up one level at a time, unless you are well bankrolled (and the last page of the book gives our bankroll recs).

Matt,

Do you guys cover standard deviation / risk of ruin / winrate / confidence levels in your bankroll recommendations?

starting,

There is a section of the book called "7 Easy Steps To No-Limit Success" which is completely appropriate for you. You might want to read that section first before moving on to the tougher parts. In fact, that's probably the best place for you to start out.

I'd say that the rest of the book would be a challenging, but reasonable for a first book. You're almost certainly going to read some things you don't really understand yet, which is fine. I'd say go ahead and read it once through, and then try reading say Professional No-Limit Hold'em: Volume 1 which focuses on a few really important concepts and covers them in great depth. Then read Small Stakes No-Limit Hold'em again. You're probably going to have to read it through a few times to get most of it, but at least you'll get your money's worth. :)

You should definitely start out as small as possible while you still retain interest. Definitely don't jump into a $1-$2 game… those games are quite tough and honestly it will probably be several months before you're breaking even in that game. I'd start at the $0.05-$0.10 level or maybe $0.10-$0.25. 6-max is fine to start. The book is very well-suited for beating those games too.
