There are several examples in the chapter on barreling for which I was surprised at the possible hands that the opponent might be holding.  I realize that a low-skilled opponent can have anything at any time, but it seems like the opponents described here were not always low-skilled.  Do the authors suggest that the opponent hand ranges given in these instances are also hands that they would play in the same way?

EXAMPLE 1: Page 75, opponent in the blinds (stats are not given) might call a preflop raise with A7, A3, 87, and 76.  Should we call with these hands from the blinds as well?

EXAMPLE 2: Page 89, opponent (31/13) might check-call on the flop and turn when he has JT and the board comes 983-J, and the flop is all one suit.  That means that opponent would be drawing for an OESD when there is a 3-flush on board.  Should we do that too?  (Note: In this case, opponent’s stats do suggest that he is low-skilled, and he did limp-call against us after we raised from the button, which also suggests that he is low-skilled.)

EXAMPLE 3: Pages 90-91, the big-blind opponent (21/17) might call preflop with 98s or 87s, and then check-call when the flop is A84, two spades.  Should we also make this preflop call, and flop call as well?  The player that he called was a 16/13 who opened from UTG.

EXAMPLE 4: Pages 90-91, the same big-blind opponent (21/17) might call preflop with “an ace, probably with a weaker kicker.”  That means he would call with like AJ and AT.  Should we also make this preflop call?  The flop and turn are A84-9, and opponent with AJ or AT checks and calls twice.  Should we do this too?

Should I call from the blinds with AJ, AT, A7, A3, 98s, 87s, and possibly even 87 and 76?  Should I call from OOP with middle pair when the flop is A84 two-toned?  Should I check-call twice when I have AT and the flop comes A84-9?  And should I draw to an OESD on a monotone flop?

If the answer is sometimes yes, sometimes no, then please give me some opponent profiles against which I would take these actions, and some against which I would not take these actions.

Very good questions.

Example1: This might suprise you but it dependsLaugh I love those guys who are good enough to steal a lot but bad enough to feel lost once they are called. They steal, I call with any hand, check the flop, they check it back with any missed or bad hand I bet the turn and they fold like 80% of the time.

Here your hand strenght dosen't count much since you are relying on steal equity a lot. If he is a good player and capable of making life very hard for you not just pre flop but post flop as well than I fold a lot. I like to 3 bet those hands you outlined. AX hands eliminates some of his value opening/ 3 bet calling range so I will take it down more pre-flop and suited connected cards are also good b/c you have nice equity when called.

I'm not an expert in blind defending and I don't think you need to be an expert in this to crush anything up to 3/6. I don't give you stats b/c I think a in a lot of situations some common sense, history with the opponent and basic hand reading does a lot better job than any stat. In blind defense I think the strongest advice is when you are confused than fold. You are in a mathematically bad position so the most you can do is run break even in the blinds but its much better to lose 1 bb with folding than a 100 with spewing.
