I play there a good bit, and I think the games keep getting tougher, but the great thing about poker is the game is constantly evolving. As long as you stay one step ahead you can still do well. The information/strategy available to players on online 6-max has increased a great deal int he last few years. SSNLHE was a kind of a niche book for regular players. Dan Harrington's new online 6-max book will get more "mainstream" exposure, and probably make the games even tougher.
You can still win, but just don't expect huge winrates at 6-max at Stars. As Ed, Matt, and Sonny say at the beginning of SSNLHE, the days of easy money at online small stakes NLHE is over. You have to play very well to succeed these days. Hence the LAG strategy they suggest to counter the solid TAG regulars.
Poker always evolves. That is the beauty of the game. The older live players used to play very tight, then guys like Doyle came in and countered them with extreme aggression. Then guys like Hellmuth, Seidel, and Chan came in and countered loose aggression, with a well timed tight aggressive trapping game to use their aggression against them. Then a new generation came back in with extreme loose aggression to counter TAG players ( aka: "Kill Phil"). Now you have alot of players employing a strong tight aggressive game online to counteract the loose "maniacs". The game will keep changing and recycling. The key is to be a chameleon, and adapt to every situation correctly. There is no single formula for success.
As for Stars, I've actually had more profit at their heads up NLHE cash games and PLO8 tables.
