I am confused on what exactly a 3 bet, 4 bet, or 5 bet consists of.  With a $1/$2 game I would expect a 3b to = $6, a 4b to = $8, etc. Or if a 3b to $6 was made then another 3b of that would be $18 (3 x $6).  With some adjustment of a little more or less sometimes based on the situation.

But in the book when giving examples of 3b, 4b, and 5b I can't seem to figure the logic of how the $ amount works as a bet and re-raises are made. The examples do not match a 3 or 4 times increase of a previous number. What is the basic math?

The terms "3 bet", "4 bet", "5 bet" are from limit holdem which have been carried over (some people say incorrectly) to no-limit.

In limit they all have fixed sizes relative to the SB or BB (depending on which street you are betting on) but in no-limit there are no fixed bet sizes.  The first raise is just called a "raise", the re-raise is called a "3 bet", then next re-raise is called a "4 bet" etc. regardless of the size of the raises.

What JJS said.

The $2 blind is the first bet.  Callers are calling the 1 bet.  If someone raises (say the cut off raises to $6), that's the second bet.  Now if the button calls they're "calling 2 bets cold", or "cold calling".   If however the button re-raises (to $18 for example), that's the third bet, so now he's 3 betting.  If the small blind calls, he would be said to be "calling 3 cold".  If the small blind re-raises again however, he'll be putting in the 4th bet.

While this is out there, a term I commonly seen misused is "raise" and "re-raise".  I will see players in the cut off's position above make it $6 to go and say "I re-raise".  No, you don't re-raise, because there is not a raise in front of you.  When the pot is not yet raised and there is only an initial bet (the "1 bet" above), your options are to fold, call, or raise.  And then on the flop it's checked to them, and they say "I raise $10″.  No, the action is checked to you, your options are to check or bet… you can not "raise" unless there is a bet to be raised.  Sorry if this sounds nit picky, but it's kind of a pet peeve of mine, and I hear these terms missused constantly.

OK, now I get it.

The 2-3-4 bet refers to the order (sequence) of the betting round and not a dollar amount.

Thanks.
