Does anyone know of any work that has been done showing how much of a hand's preflop strength can be attributed to hole cards versus position?

Not explicitly, but the topic is often discussed indirectly.  In most modern online games above microstakes, I'd say position exceeds hand on the button when open-raising and sometimes from the cutoff and small blind when open-raising.  Otherwise preflop hand strength is close or more important imo, of course depending on opponents and such.  When stacks are deep and skill edge is large, position can be > cards more often.
