Hello,

I have nearly 100,000 hands at $2 NL and would like a critique of my play. What stats do I need to post?

If you have HEM or PokerTracker software, the standard stats would help: VPIP/PFR/AGG factor/ 3 bet%/ blind steal %, and also maybe your $/BB so far.

Also, we would need to know if you are playing 9 handed or 6 handed.

I have HEM. I play 9 handed $2 NL at Full Tilt.

Stats:

99,304 hands

$54.19 in winnings ($39.63 EV adjusted)

bb/100 = 2.73    Std Dev bb = 73.37

Overall VPIP % = 19.0    Overall PFR % = 10.5

UO VPIP: Early=14.6  Middle=18.6  CO=31.6  BU=50.0

UP PFR:  Early=8.4  Middle=12.9  CO=26.0  BU=41.3

Overall Aggression Factor = 1.29

Flop AF = 1.21    Turn AF = 1.16     River = 1.98

Overall Agg % = 23.2

Flop Agg % = 21.6    Turn Agg % = 25.7    River Agg % = 23.8

3bet % = 1.7       Fold to 3bet % = 56.7

CO Steal%=26.0   BU Steal%=41.3    SB Steal%=50.0

SB fold to steal % = 87.9      BB fold to steal % = 82.9

SB reraise steal % = 2.2        BB reraise steal % = 2.8

Flop C Bet % = 61.7    Turn C Bet % = 49.2      River C Bet % = 61.7

Flop CBet Success=50.4  Turn CBet Success=30.4  River CBet Success=39.5

Flop fold vs C bet % = 59.7      Turn fold vs C bet % = 34.5      River fold vs C bet % 34.9

Won $ When Saw Flop % = 35.6

Went to Showdown % = 53.4      Won $ When Saw Showdown % = 35.6

I figured I would just post alot of my stats. If I left something important out, please let me know. I would really like to increase my winrate to somewhere between 5 and 10 bb/100. Is that a realistic goal at these stakes? Oh, and for what it's worth my redline (non-showdown winnings) slopes down pretty bad (about a 45% angle). Is it possible to fix with this without ruining my showdown winnings?

Would greatly appreciate constructive criticism and feedback. Advice from Ed, Matt, or Sunny as well as other winning players would be very helpful.  I apologize for the length but thank you for taking time to read my post.

Good stuff overall Seinfeld. I would not change too much. If I could offer a few suggestions:

  • I would look to 3 bet more with premium hands for value, and alsowith a wide range, in late position,  to counteract blatant blind stealers. Your 3 bet% is pretty low, and your "fold to blind steal" stats are pretty high. Eventhough you are 9 handed, and generally want to play a tighter TAG style than in a 6 handed game. Overall, don't be afraid to get a little more aggressive in good spots. Don't be afraid to 3 bet with a wider range against blatant late position blind stealers. Also, don't be afraid to 3 bet more with your premium hands for value.
  • Steal the blinds a little more often. You seem to be utilizing your button well, but don't be afraid to mix it up more preflop. You will run into alot of super tight knitty players in 9 handed cash games. If the table it tight, open more loosely, and in late position, look to take the blinds. It seems small, but it can really improve your winrate.
  • You VPIP/PFR numbers are good, but overall I would try to limp less, and raise (or fold)more. Preferably, you would like your PFR % to be closer to your VPIP% numbers. Instead of 19/10…maybe closer to 25/20 would likely increase profit.
  • Overall, you seem like a good player. But the "ABC Poker" TAG Style you employ seems to be only getting you to a little above break even winrate. Get more aggressive and creative in good spots. And most importantly adapt to the table dynamics, as opposed to following a certain "formula". You may have to change your style at every single table, and sometimes even change it a few times at the same table as different types of players leave and join. Sometimes even every hand depending on the opponent.
  • You seem to have general TAG poker knowledge down pretty well. Now you must get good at the "intangibles" to maximize profit. (Game selection, not playing when tired, isolating bad players, tilt control, bankroll management, etc) Unfortunately, this is the hardest part to master Laugh

Good luck! You seem like a solid player.

….and keep in mind that getting more aggressive, will likely cause more fluctuation in your winrate…you will have bigger wins and probably bigger losses than your current style. Just do you best to maximize the wins (practice building pots with monster hands, and staying in juicy games with bad players as long as you can) while keeping the losses as small as possible (quit or change tables when the game is tough, quit when you are tired or losing badly)

i'm with mullet.  one thing about blind defense: before you three-bet to punish a blind stealer, think about your flop and turn strategies.  what will you cbet with?  what will the bet size be?  if you are going to play fit-or-fold after three-betting and getting called, then you need an opponent who folds to three bet a lot.  otherwise you are giving money away to any aggro.

Good point Matt. If you 3 bet out of the blinds, aggressive players will defend their positional advantage often by flat calling to see a flop and use their position advantage, so have a postflop plan of attack.

Regardless of your flop plan, try not to employ a "fit or fold" approach. Let the flop texture, your opponent's style, and your image, and the chip stacks let you decide the best play, and don't be afraid to fire out a flop "donk" bet after you 3 bet even when you miss the flop. A 3 bet, and then an out of position flop c-bet shows considerable strength, and could likely induce a fold from your opponent unless they are strong themselves. However, if the villain calls or reraises your flop bet, usually shut down unless you are very strong yourself. This means he is likely strong, and even if you sense he's bluffing, he will still have last position on the turn and river, which could put you in some tough spots later on the in the hand.
